UPDATE!!! MaintenanceWidget works with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6)!!!! Rejoice! All of this is thanks to the tremendous (and speedy) support of Nicholas Mouronvalle! Thanks Nicholas! If you want to do some developing of your own just download the Source Code. for information on how to install developer tools go to Apple's Developer Portal. What does it do?
This little widget helps maintain your Mac OS X system (10.4 and beyond) It does this
using the power of dashcode and some handy terminal commands that it executes for you. This piece of software is free and issued under the GPL (GNU General Public License) which you can read here. You can get the source code here. if you have a problem with this just contact me. I hope you enjoy this product and have no problems so you dont have to email me :). Thanks for downloading!
Features
- Runs unix maintenance scripts (aka cron scripts)
- Forces the trash to empty
- Repairs disk permissions on the startup drive
- Resets the Finder and Toggles Hidden Files
Here is what the maintenance or cron scripts actually do...
Daily Script
- Removes old logs and temporary files
- Rotates system.log
Weekly Script
- Rebuilds locate and whatis databases
- Rotates logs for ftp, lpr, mail, netinfo, ipfw, ppp, secure
Monthly Script
- Runs login accounting
- Rotates logs for wtmp, install, fax
COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
- Does it work on Snow Leopard? YES!
- If you are having trouble please reinstall the widget and make sure you have administrative privileges.
- What password does it want? the one you login with, the one that OS X normally asks for when you are installing any kind of software that needs admin privileges.
- I dont have a password!?!?! yes you do…. go to system preferences -> accounts to change it or think hard to find out what it is.
- MaintenanceWidget Doesn't work with passwords that contain spaces (sorry).
- There are slight animation issues with lighting up of tabs.
